You know the feeling, when you sit in a room and clearly feel something’s just not right. Perhaps, you love this vintage vase and a woods map bringing your inner wanderlust to life, and yet…something feels ‘off.’ The good news is: you’re not alone in that. We did some homework for you and listed the top things that sabotage your space.
Power Cords You Can See
Living in a Wi-Fied world means dealing with the cord issues. So, what do we have now? Tons of visible power strips and TV cords that just make your eye twitch simply ruin your room’s design.
- Here’s what we recommend trying:
- Paintable cord covers.
- Decorative cord or electrical boxes with cutouts for airflow.
The solutions are pretty impressive, just like their variety. But regardless of what you choose, make sure to do things correctly and safely. No running cords under rugs or pieces of furniture!
Wrong Size of Rugs
To make your space come together, look down. If the room is large, choose the large rug. Thus, it’ll create a sense of space and unite all pieces of furniture. If it’s too small, the place will look awkward. Plus, keep the simple rule in mind: each piece of furniture should have two legs (or if possible, more) on the rug. If that’s impossible to do, you should look for a bigger rug.
You Choose Cool Light
Let’s just say, cool light bulbs aren’t cool at all. On the one hand, they are brighter. But take a closer look at them. They’re colder and bluer, turning the coziest setting into a sterile office. Soft white or warm white bulbs (between 2000 and 3000K) are the best move.
Next, consider layered lighting. Turn off the big ceiling light and let the layered one make the room feel visually decorated and dynamic. As the light balances from wall to wall, the space looks like coming together.
Big, Bare, and Dull Walls
The truth (believe it or not) is blank walls have exactly the same effect as those that are too bold or too bright. Decorating ‘em is a real challenge. However, if you choose to leave things as they are, you’ll continue living in a kind of unfinished, hospital-like chamber. We recommend taking on any of the strategies below:
- Create a gallery wall where a couple of vintage frames will be the stars.
- Hang a wooden world map to demonstrate where you left your heart.
- Or allow yourself to buy the larger-than-life art you’ve been dreaming of for ages.
Whatever you decide to do, it should be personal so you are happy to admire at any time of the day.
As you can see, a shift in light, the rug of the proper size, and a piece of art that melts your heart are enough to go from the room slightly off to why didn’t I do this sooner?
