The Terrifying Turn in ‘Evil Dead Rise’
One of Nell Fisher‘s most notable and certainly most talked-about roles to date is her portrayal of Kassie in the 2023 horror film Evil Dead Rise. This film, a terrifying installment in the iconic Evil Dead franchise, thrust Nell Fisher into the spotlight and showcased her ability to deliver a chilling performance in a high-stakes genre.
Working on a horror film, especially one as intense as Evil Dead Rise, presented unique challenges for a young actress. However, director Lee Cronin took great care to ensure Nell Fisher‘s comfort and understanding of the make-believe aspects of the production. He thoughtfully prepared her for the gruesome scenes by having her play with fake blood and vomit before filming even began. This innovative approach helped explain the special effects and allowed her to approach the terrifying elements of the story as part of an elaborate game. This kind of thoughtful on-set preparation highlights the professionalism and care taken in working with young actors in challenging roles.
Due to the film’s R-rating and graphic content, Nell Fisher was, understandably, too young to see Evil Dead Rise in cinemas upon its release. However, she wasn’t entirely left out! The production arranged a private screening of a specially edited version of the film, allowing her to experience her work in a suitable format. This experience, while unique, underscores the fact that even when portraying terrifying scenarios, the environment on set can be managed to be safe and appropriate for young performers. She co-starred in the film with talented actors like Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan, learning from their experience in a demanding genre. Her performance as Kassie was widely praised, solidifying her reputation as a young actress capable of delivering powerful and memorable portrayals.
Joining the Upside Down: The Nell Fisher ‘Stranger Things’ Role
Perhaps the role that has garnered the most attention for Nell Fisher is her casting as Holly Wheeler in the highly anticipated fifth and final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. This iconic series, known for its blend of horror, sci-fi, and coming-of-age drama, is a global phenomenon, and her inclusion marks a significant milestone in her career.
The role of Holly Wheeler was previously played by twin actresses Anniston and Tinsley Price in earlier seasons. However, for the fifth season, the decision was made to recast the character. This wasn’t a reflection on the previous actresses, but rather a creative choice driven by the narrative demands of the final season. The showrunners explained that the character of Holly Wheeler would have a significantly larger presence and require more maturity for the complex storyline unfolding in the Upside Down. Nell Fisher was chosen to embody this expanded and more pivotal version of Holly, a testament to her growing talent and ability to handle more substantial roles. We can imagine the excitement of joining such a beloved cast and starting on a journey to save Hawkins!
The storyline for Holly Wheeler in Stranger Things Season 5 promises to be deeply engaging and, as we’ve come to expect from the series, quite terrifying. Holly’s role will reportedly involve direct interaction with the formidable villain, Vecna, who appears to her as an imaginary friend named ‘Mr. Whatsit’. This creepy twist suggests a deeply psychological and unsettling arc for the character. The narrative is also said to be influenced by the classic novel A Wrinkle in Time, hinting at themes of courage, other dimensions, and the power of imagination. The episode title ‘The Vanishing of Holly Wheeler’ further references the show’s pilot episode, bringing the series full circle and suggesting a central role for Nell Fisher‘s character in the climactic events.
Taking on such an active role in a show like Stranger Things means facing considerable physical challenges. Nell Fisher has reportedly performed stunts, including an underwater sequence, pushing her physical limits and demonstrating her commitment to authenticity. Beyond the physical demands, the emotional weight of the role is significant. Fortunately, she has not been without guidance. She received invaluable mentorship from her seasoned co-stars, with Finn Wolfhard (who plays Mike Wheeler) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Vecna himself!) offering advice and support. Sadie Sink (Max Mayfield) also offered her mentorship, providing a supportive environment for the young actress to thrive amidst the Upside Down’s chaos.
Highlights, Challenges, and Future Projects
Nell Fisher‘s career, though still in its early stages, has already been marked by significant highlights and unique challenges. Her journey illustrates the dedication and resilience required to succeed in the demanding world of entertainment, especially for a young performer balancing the rigors of filming with the ordinary experiences of childhood.
Career Highlights and Challenges for Nell Fisher

However, being a young actress in Hollywood comes with its own set of challenges. One of the most significant is undoubtedly balancing the demanding schedule of filming with the necessities of education and a semblance of normal life. Imagine the homework on a Stranger Things set! Furthermore, the intense secrecy surrounding major productions like Stranger Things meant that Nell Fisher couldn’t even tell her classmates where she was or what she was doing for an entire year. This level of discretion, while necessary for blockbuster productions, certainly adds a layer of complexity to a child’s social life. Despite these problems, her performances have garnered critical acclaim, with many praising her ability to bring depth and authenticity to her characters. These accolades serve as powerful affirmations of her talent and hard work.
What’s Next for the Young Star?
