What’s in Season: January 27, 2014

golden delicious apples

The recent snow might have interfered with some of your social plans, but it doesn’t have to change your seasonal fruit regime. Apples are some of the simplest pleasures of winter eating and Samascott Orchards, a fourth-generation family-owned and -operated farm in Kinderhook, New York, has over 70 varieties.

Here are a few favorites from Brooklyn-based Good Eggs, as well as some squash and pear selections:

Golden Russet apples:

These beauties would make a great apple salsa garnish for this roasted parsnip and sweet potato soup from the Edible Brooklyn Cookbook.

Spaghetti squash:

As we learned during this past Thanksgivukkah, latkes can come in all shapes and sizes. We suggest this recipe spaghetti squash latke recipe from Great Performances.

Buttercup squash:

Yes, as you can see, it’s as cute as its name implies.

You can eat these now or can ’em for later with our poached pears in wine recipe from Put ’em Up! Fruit.
