Edible‘s seventh celebration of New York wine and food, Brooklyn Uncorked, will once again descend upon Skylight at 1 Hanson Place on May 29. (Get your tickets here.) This year we are particularly excited to be able to taste the produce from the 2013 vintage. It was particularly sunny and dry, and people in the wine biz on Long Island are even going as far as to say “Vintage of the Century.” The century’s still young, but 2013 might end up in the top ten.
The first wines of any vintage to be released are rosés, and Brooklyn Uncorked will give you the chance to taste 2013 bottles from some of the best producers. These wines will be fresh, light and bursting with the ripe fruit. Most have not been released to the public yet, but will be within the next few weeks. Here’s a preview:
1. Macari
Macari Rosé: The rosé has a light spritz to it and bright cherry fruit. They served it at a recent barrel tasting paired with pickled vegetables from Noah’s in Greenport.
2. Wölffer Estate Vinyards
Wölffer Summer in a Bottle: This year, Wölffer has upped its rosé game a bit by producing a top-of-the-line bottling to showcase the ripe vintage. The new rosé, Summer in a Bottle, will retail for $24, comes with a screw cap and a bottle busting out with flowers. Their tried-and-true estate rosé will still be available for $17.
3. Bridge Lane
Bridge Lane: The new label from Lieb Cellars will be tapping a 20-liter keg to pour tastes of their 2013 rosé. The wine will also be available in 3-liter boxes.
4. Bouquet
Bouquet: Friend of Edible Lisa Donneson made two rosés in 2013, one dry and one off-dry. Both are predominately merlot; the dry version tastes of berries and pears. The off-dry, which means it has a touch of sweetness, leans towards watermelon.
Most of the winemakers will be pouring their own wines; ask them about the 2013 whites which will be the next wave from that spectacular vintage to hit the beach, where you should be, drinking Long Island rosé.
