For us, any time is a good time to get out on the farm. We’re especially fond of this transitional time of year; folks are puttin’ up hay for the cold months, humidity wanes, and pears hang low.
There are several farm dinners on our radar for the coming weeks, but we’re especially anticipating Goatfell Farm‘s first annual event on Saturday, September 28. Goatfell is owned by chef George Weld, who’s also behind Brooklyn’s egg and Parish Hall. He and his wife own Goatfell, which is located “on the cusp of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley” in Oak Hill, NY. Weld’s restaurants use seasonal products from the farm when available, and until this year, didn’t expand social gatherings on the property beyond friends, family and staff.
That will change later this month when they celebrate their fifth growing season with, as they said, “produce from our farm, meat from our neighbors’ farms, and plenty of local(ish) beer.” We asked Weld for specifics and he said that they’ll be getting a pig from the neighbor’s place and look forward to harvesting the best of what the farm has to offer that weekend. Squash, beans, peas, pea shoots, tomatoes, lettuce, kale, and broccoli rabe are likely to appear on the menu.
Goatfell hopes to start the event early in the afternoon so that folks who want to return to the city can do so. They’re also encouraging guests to make a weekend of it by booking a nearby hotel. To make these arrangements easier, they’ve even created a web document listing local lodging options.
