Plant-based ice cream is having something of a moment. One we’re hoping is here to stay. For those with dietary restrictions or those that simply want to cut back on their consumption of animal products, there’s never been so many, delicious non-dairy ice cream alternatives. Here are at least eight on our radar:

Juice Press recently began dishing out two flavors (Chocolate and Fountain of Youth) of organic, plant-based soft serve ice cream at its Whole Foods 365 and Empire State Building locations. It took Juice Press two years to fine-tune its recipes which use organic superfoods to create the rich textures. It was worth the wait.
Van Leeuwen
One of New York City’s homegrown ice cream brand started selling vegan flavors back in 2013. Today, the company offers eight flavors of creamy, rich and luscious vegan ice cream as well as a rotating selection of vegan specialties. And Van Leeuwen turns 10 this year—we’ll have a pint for that.
JAWEA
You can find plant-based ice cream brand JAWEA’s pints in stores throughout the city. Available in five different flavors, our favorite is the Horchata. Inspired by owner Rosenthal’s travels to Mexico it’s a creamy vanilla with tart coconut and a touch of cinnamon.
Alchemy Creamery
The lactose-intolerant founders of Alchemy Creamery know how to make a delicious vegan, gluten free ice cream. Their ice creams are made with hazelnut and almond milks. Try them for yourself at Smorgasburg or pick up a pint at Fairway Markets.
Creme and Cocoa

Biting into a creme and cocoa flavor is like being transported to a beachy island. The Brooklyn shop specializes in sweet treats and refreshing flavors found in the Caribbean. They offer a number of vegan flavors including Passion Fruit, Pina Colada, Cocoa Peanut Butter, Sorrel and more.
L’Albero dei Gelati
If you love gelato, the NYC locations of the Italy’s storied gelateria L’Albero dei Gelati is not to be missed. Most of their seasonal sorbets are dairy free and some of their water-based “cream” gelatos, hazelnut, chocolate, almond and pistachio are also plant-based.
Kokus

It’s hard to believe the creamery coconut soft serve dessert isn’t dairy based. It’s that luscious. This plant-based treat will be available at Springbone Kitchen in the West Village all summer long. Top it with Spiced Turmeric Honey, CBD Cacao, Black Sesame Granola, and more. Note: the coconut cream is sweetened with raw honey so it’s not vegan.
Ample Hills
When Ample Hills Creamery first opened in Prospect Heights back in 2011 it quickly became a destination for its made from scratch ice cream. Multiple locations later, the creamery is still known for its whimsical flavors. While their flavors rotate frequently, they always carry at least one dairy-free sorbet.
