I’ll be the first to admit I teared up at the Macy’s Christmas window display. And I’m even considering leaving Brooklyn after work hours to check out the holiday pop-up bar. But it’s important to remember that while consumerism makes for a twinkly five minutes of cheer, the real beauty of the season lies in love and companionship. And shadow puppets.
Holes in the Wall Collective and Industry City Distillery are teaming up to present a currency-free holiday party this Friday, and they’re calling it “a tiny insurrection … a fund-raiser for our own humanity.” There’s no entry fee, and guests are only asked to bring a gift. Not a cheap stuffed animal to stuff in an oversize box labeled “for the kids” upon entry, but a genuine offering — they suggest that hairdressers dress hair, fortune tellers tell fortunes, and foodies bring food.
The event will also feature an alcohol procurement system that puts the bar in barter and a shadow puppet installation. A distillery tour will take place at 9:00 p.m.
