It’s getting cool enough to bike around town without back sweat anxiety, and the next few months are the perfect time to pump up your tires or hop on a Citibike to explore new parts of the city. Semi-organized bike tours of community gardens and farmers markets abound this time of year, and we’ve rounded up some of our favorites for your next weekend ride.
Brooklyn Queens Land Trust Community Garden Tour
This self-guided tour winds through thirteen Brooklyn community gardens in Fort Greene, Crown Heights, Bed Stuy and Bushwick. They’ll be providing free Citi Bikes to the first fifteen participants (signups start at 8:30 a.m. this Sunday, September 15) and the tour ends with a potluck at Central Bainbridge Garden. The tour is free, though they will be accepting donations. It’s the perfect opportunity to peek inside all those gardens you’ve been scoping out on your walk home from the subway and connect with the gardeners that keep them running.
Greenmarket Bike Tours
GrowNYC’s Greenmarkets will be hosting a tour through Brooklyn and Queens this Saturday, September 12 in collaboration with Bike New York. You’ll explore several markets starting with a free breakfast in Sunnyside and ending at Smorgasburg. The $25 ride includes a t-shirt and a guided eight mile ride.
Urban Ecology Tour at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
This $29 tour happens roughly once per month and includes a visit to the Brooklyn Grange rooftop farm. You’ll also stop at the New York Harbor School to learn about their plans to clean up city waterways and learn about plans for a Navy Yard memorial park.
Self-Guided NYC Food Cart Tour
This guide plans a food truck route from Midtown to Sunset Park with stops all along the way. Want more freestyle bike tour inspiration? Check out our dumpling tour of Sunset Park, ice cream tour of Park Slope, day in Ditmas Park, and Crown Heights Caribbean food tour.
