In the wake of California’s failed Proposition 37, which would have mandated the labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (aka GMOs), the debate over the consumer’s right to know is getting heated. Several states are pushing for legislation to require GMO labeling and last month Whole Foods announced they would label all their products containing GMOs by 2018. Despite consumer outrage, even The New York Times Editorial Board says GMO labeling is unnecessary. With all this in mind, the NYU Wagner Food Policy Alliance and GMO Free NY are hosting a panel tomorrow night, April 4th, called “GMO Labeling: Do We Need It?” The panelists are Dr. Walter S. De Jong of Cornell University’s Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Dr. Carolyn Dimitri of NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health, Jean Halloran of Consumers Union’s Food Policy Initiatives and Patty Lovera of Food & Water Watch’s Food Team. It’s free to attend from 6:30-8:30, but you need to RSVP here.
