There’s a new farm brewery opening up in a month or two in Gowanus, and they’re hoping to raise some additional funding through their Kickstarter campaign that ends this Wednesday, September 30. Along with a custom draft system, the soon-to-open Strong Rope Brewery hopes to fund the construction of their bar, which will be made from black walnut wood reclaimed from a tree that fell during Hurricane Sandy. They’re almost there, but they need a few final backers (a $25 pledge buys a tour of the brewery!) to hit their goal.
Owner and award-winning homebrewer Jason Sahler plans to use the tasting room to host events with farmers, maltsters and “all of the people that are essential to what we do.” Though he admits that it’s not yet feasible to source exclusively from this region (certain specialty malts and hop varieties are not readily available in New York), he’s hopeful that local ingredients will soon be more readily available. “When we’re able to provide feedback and information about what we need, we can kind of develop this relationship and grow together,” he says.
Inspired by an eye-opening trip to Scotland, Sahler started brewing about 13 years ago. He’s been entering competitions until 2011, and his beers have taken home first and second place at Homebrew Alley. In April, he signed a lease on the Gowanus location and he’s planning to open to the public in late October or early November.
