Brooklyn Farmer Premiers at DOC NYC on Saturday

It’s not easy to build the world’s largest rooftop farm, but our friends at Brooklyn Grange have proven that it’s not only possible — it’s profitable. Since they broke ground in 2010, we’ve celebrated the opening of their apiary, we’ve fallen in love with their salsa and we’ve enjoyed dinner on their rooftop.

Now we’re able to follow Brooklyn Grange’s expansion in video form. Group Theory, a Brooklyn-based production studio, has created a documentary called Brooklyn Farmer that explores the unique challenges inherent in operating a large, urban rooftop farm. The film follows head farmer Ben Flanner and CEO Gwen Schantz as they expand the farm from their Long Island City location to a second roof in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The trailer above will give you a taste of the film, but Brooklyn Farmer premieres at the DOC NYC documentary festival on Saturday at the SVA Theater. To purchase tickets or learn more about Brooklyn Farmer, head to DOC NYC’s website.
