SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly: Ecology\, The Original Commons
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:\n\n\nGreen Series: Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly\n\nEcology: The Original Commons\n\nEcology is the original commons\, the basis and ultimate standard of relational and thoroughly interdependent life systems. How can we learn from ecology ways to improve the contemporary commons—be it public or civic space or the commons of knowledge? And what aspects of biological life are currently under threat in our public sphere?\n\nJoin ecological artist Mary Mattingly in a talk where she explores the notion of “the commons” as it has informed her artistic practice and her ways of engaging with other citizens through public art projects. Mattingly will discuss previous works and her current commissioned living sculpture at Central Library\, part of the exhibition Stars Down to Earth: Mary Mattingly & Dario Robleto. From wonders of the cosmos to urgent questions around habitable futures on earth\, this exhibition brings together the scientific inquiries and complex visual systems of these two artists\, who also\, through their art\, engage with the world as citizen scientists and ethicists.\n\nA soon-to-be-announced guest speaker will join for a discussion with Mattingly on science\, ethics and the commons for the second portion of the program\, followed by audience Q & A.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is made possible through the generous support of Whole Foods Market.

SUMMARY:Empty Waters: The Future of Seafood in America
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nThis year\, Long Island baymen were shocked to discover that on the opening day of scallop season\, most of the scallops in Peconic Bay were dead. Meanwhile\, Gulf oysters are dying\, and wild shrimp—once plentiful along much of the US coastline—can only be found in certain pockets of the South. In a series of stories published in October and November of 2019\, the New York Times reported on these particular instances of seafood devastation taking place in our waters. \nJoin award-winning New York Times writer Melissa Clark as she leads a thought-provoking conversation with oyster expert Julie Qiu\, Sea to Table founder & CEO Sean Dimin\, and journalist Charity Robey as they unpack the complex issues that impact our seafood supply and discuss possible solutions for the future. \nThe panel conversation will be followed by a reception featuring beverages from Talea Beer Co. and sustainable seafood dishes courtesy of Australis Barramundi and Sea to Table.

SUMMARY:Re:Setting the Table: The Future of Chinese Food and Drink in America
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nMOFAD’s Chow Exhibition will soon be closing\, but Chinese cuisine’s American story is just beginning. Join writers Serena Dai and Derek Sandhaus and chef Lucas Sin for a spirited conversation on the future of food and drink in the United States. \nOur panel will explore the traditional role of food and alcohol in Chinese culture\, and how social and historical circumstances have shaped the way diners encountered it. Why are Chinese take-out restaurants\, once a popular mainstay of urban American dining\, closing at alarming rates? Why aren’t more people talking about Baiju\, the world’s most consumed liquor? And how are trends in China influencing restaurants in America? Find out the answers to these questions\, and many more. \nThe discussion will be followed by a reception with drinks and bites courtesy of MOFAD and Ming River Sichuan Baiju. Derek Sandhaus will also be signing his new book\, Drunk in China: Baiju and the World’s Oldest Drinking Culture.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Michael Ruhlman in Conversation with David Lebovitz
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nDear friends\, \nThe Ruhlman is coming! \nJoin us for an evening in celebration of his new genius cookbook\, From Scratch. The evening will include a moderated conversation with chef\, author\, and blogger David Lebovitz\, Q + A\, and signing. Tickets also include an arancine and something sweet to finish. Drinks for sale. \nAn indispensable new cookbook from James Beard Award-winning food writer Michael Ruhlman\, From Scratch looks at 10 favorite meals\, including roast chicken\, the perfect omelet\, and paella–and then\, through 175 recipes\, explores myriad alternate pathways that the kitchen invites. A delicious lasagna can be ready in about an hour\, or you could turn it into a project: try making and adding some homemade sausage. Explore the limits of from-scratch cooking: make your own pasta\, grow your own tomatoes\, and make your own homemade mozzarella and ricotta. Ruhlman tells you how. There are easy and more complex versions for most dishes\, vegetarian options\, side dishes\, sub-dishes\, and strategies for leftovers. \nRuhlman reflects on the ways that cooking from scratch brings people together\, how it can calm the nerves and focus the mind\, and how it nourishes us\, body and soul.

SUMMARY:flour power
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nFor years\, we’ve fought against the idea that a woman’s place is “in the kitchen.” But what if we want to be there — not because it’s what society expects of us but because it empowers us? \nEven though baking is often associated with femininity\, men dominate the high-end pastry chef occupation. But women are here\, rolling up our sleeves\, sprinkling flour\, kneading dough\, providing for ourselves\, our families\, and the public. We’re taking back the kitchen\, the oven\, the whisk\, the rolling pin\, the piping bag. All of it. \nJoin us for a conversation about the powerful\, awe-inspiring\, life-sustaining process of baking moderated by Vallery Lomas\, winner of the Great American Baking Show\, with Natasha Pickowicz\, pastry chef of Flora Bar and Café Altro Paradiso\, Zoe Kanan\, head baker at New York’s Studio and Simon & The Whale at the Freehand Hotel\, and Erin McDowell\, author of The Fearless Baker and Baking Consultant at Large for Food52. You could call them the HBIC (head bakers in charge). \nPlus\, we’ll have a live cake-decorating demonstration inspired by our discussion by Rose McAdoo\, cake artist-activist extraordinaire of Whisk Me Away Cakes. \nAnd we’ll have delicious eats from La Palapa through our partner Caviar and lots of baked goodies made by our panelists.

SUMMARY:American Food and Immigration Policy: Past\, Present\, and Future
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nTaco Trucks on Every Corner. The Yemeni bodega strike. A Day Without Immigrants. Today\, the complex relationships between immigration policy and American food culture are more evident than ever. \nMOFAD is teaming up with the Street Vendor Project to explore the impact of US immigration policy — past\, present\, and future — on American food and culture. Join us for an evening of thought-provoking discussion\, followed by an informal reception featuring light refreshments from Brooklyn Brewery and Sonia Perez\, a street cart vendor and member of Street Vendor Project’s Leadership Council. \nWe’ll hear the story of Sonia Perez\, and our panel will explore how policies like the Chinese Exclusion Act\, the Bracero Program\, the Hart-Celler Act\, and the Diversity Visa Program have shaped how we eat today. Along the way\, we’ll discuss how these policies have affected immigrant food businesses owners and their employees\, the roles food businesses play in American immigrant communities\, how food shapes perceptions of these communities\, and the question of how — and why — a cuisine becomes American.

SUMMARY:Lightfoot Market Debut Event
DESCRIPTION:According to the organizers: \n\nOur debut event on April 30th in DUMBO will showcase over 50 business models that value environmental and social initiatives by bringing like-minded organizations together for commerce\, arts\, and education. We want buyers to know that shopping responsibly can be easy\, while letting businesses with exceptional ethics shine.\n \nIn addition to the market experience\, we will have a speaker series in a side room at the venue to bring a direct educational component to the event. One of those events is a food panel\, which will look at innovative ways to grow and purchase food sustainably in the urban environment.\n
