SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly: Ecology\, The Original Commons
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:\n\n\nGreen Series: Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly\n\nEcology: The Original Commons\n\nEcology is the original commons\, the basis and ultimate standard of relational and thoroughly interdependent life systems. How can we learn from ecology ways to improve the contemporary commons—be it public or civic space or the commons of knowledge? And what aspects of biological life are currently under threat in our public sphere?\n\nJoin ecological artist Mary Mattingly in a talk where she explores the notion of “the commons” as it has informed her artistic practice and her ways of engaging with other citizens through public art projects. Mattingly will discuss previous works and her current commissioned living sculpture at Central Library\, part of the exhibition Stars Down to Earth: Mary Mattingly & Dario Robleto. From wonders of the cosmos to urgent questions around habitable futures on earth\, this exhibition brings together the scientific inquiries and complex visual systems of these two artists\, who also\, through their art\, engage with the world as citizen scientists and ethicists.\n\nA soon-to-be-announced guest speaker will join for a discussion with Mattingly on science\, ethics and the commons for the second portion of the program\, followed by audience Q & A.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is made possible through the generous support of Whole Foods Market.

SUMMARY:Empty Waters: The Future of Seafood in America
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nThis year\, Long Island baymen were shocked to discover that on the opening day of scallop season\, most of the scallops in Peconic Bay were dead. Meanwhile\, Gulf oysters are dying\, and wild shrimp—once plentiful along much of the US coastline—can only be found in certain pockets of the South. In a series of stories published in October and November of 2019\, the New York Times reported on these particular instances of seafood devastation taking place in our waters. \nJoin award-winning New York Times writer Melissa Clark as she leads a thought-provoking conversation with oyster expert Julie Qiu\, Sea to Table founder & CEO Sean Dimin\, and journalist Charity Robey as they unpack the complex issues that impact our seafood supply and discuss possible solutions for the future. \nThe panel conversation will be followed by a reception featuring beverages from Talea Beer Co. and sustainable seafood dishes courtesy of Australis Barramundi and Sea to Table.

SUMMARY:Dead Distillers Tour
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nGreen-Wood is teaming with our friends at Kings County Distillery to delve into the past and present of distilling\, Brooklyn style. The afternoon kicks off with a trolley tour of the cemetery’s permanent residents with whiskey connections\, including the only casualty in the contentious Whiskey Wars of the mid-1800s. Afterward\, the trolley will head to Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to explore how whiskey is made and enjoy a tasting of four of their of their delectable products (which they have been producing since 2010). \nThis tour is based upon the newly published book “Dead Distillers: A History of the Upstarts and Outlaws who Made American Spirits” by Colin Spoelman\, co-founder and Master Distiller at Kings County Distillery. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the distillery. \nLimited to 30 persons. This event is strictly 21+; I.D. required. This tour begins promptly at 3:30PM\, no late admission allowed. \n$35 for members of Green-Wood and BHS/$40 for non-members. \nGreen-Wood trolley tours are fully accessible and ADA compliant. In order to accommodate a wheelchair or other mobility device on the trolley\, advance arrangements must be made. Please call (718) 210-3080\, ext. 1. Please note that portions of the tour take place outside the trolley and may require exiting the vehicle on multiple occasions. Please contact the Historic Fund for more information. \nFor this program you will check in at the Gothic Arches\, right at the main entrance. Trolley tours are run rain or shine\, with the exception of dangerous conditions as determined by Green-Wood. Click here for our inclement weather policy.

SUMMARY:Spring Thug Walk
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nIn urban areas we share our precious green spaces with all kinds of plants. Invasive plants or ‘weeds’ are those that have been imported to this environment from their ecological homelands\, either by gardeners and misguided urban planners\, or by accident (seeds in animal fodder\, for example). \nJapanese knotweed is a notoriously invasive plant that tastes like a cross between rhubarb and sorrel. It is crisp when raw\, meltingly-soft when cooked. It is sour. In Forage Harvest Feast I extol its culinary potential via recipes ranging from pickles to slow spring stews. Come and learn to identify its spring shoots\, so asparagus-like in appearance at this time of year\, and explore ways to eat it at home. \nThe walk will also encompass other botanical thugs\, like ground elder\, lesser celandine\, garlic mustard and mugwort. \nThe tasting picnic will feature\, you guessed it: weeds.
