SUMMARY:Back to School: The Policy and Practice of School Lunch
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom our organizers: \nWhether they are universally free\, served throughout the summer\, or meatless\, school meals are a perennial hot button issue in New York City and beyond. The stakeholders are passionate and diverse: politicians\, unions\, superintendents\, parents\, and of course\, the students. As are the opinions about what facet of school meals are the most important: nutrition\, sourcing\, cost\, and\, last but not least\, whether the food will actually be eaten. \nWith Child Nutrition Reauthorization\, which determines national policy for school food programs\, up before Congress\, and the second anniversary of The Free Lunch for All Program in NYC\, this discussion is as timely as ever. Join Brooklyn Borough President\, Eric Adams\, Founder of Brigaid\, Dan Giusti\, author of Free For All\, Professor Janet Poppendieck\, and former Editor in Chief of Edible Manhattan and Brooklyn\, Ariel Lauren Wilson for an honest discussion the issues surrounding school meals in NYC and beyond. \nAn informal reception with samples of Brigaid’s school lunch menu to follow the conversation.

SUMMARY:FERN Talks & Eats is coming to Brooklyn!
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nWe’re hosting Ruth Reichl and Dirt Candy chef Amanda Cohen for a conversation on #MeToo in the restaurant business. The conversation will be anchored by Cohen’s essay in Esquire about the media’s wholesale neglect of female chefs until the current scandals. “Women may not have value as chefs\, but as victims we’re finally interesting!” she writes. Reichl will discuss the issue from her decades-long vantage point on the industry\, beginning with her earliest days as a food critic in Berkeley to her perch at Gourmet. It is nothing if not timely. \nJoin us beforehand for a reception featuring complimentary eats\, beer\, wine and hard cider including snacks from a team of chefs from a quartet of Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group restaurants. \nVIP ticketholders receive reserved seating for the panel and can attend a multi-course seasonal dinner by Cupps\, Ciardullo\, Brekke and Wilson following the panel. Wines for the dinner supplied by Weygandt-Metzler Importing. \nReception: 5:30pm to 6:30pm \nPanel: 6:30pm to 7:30pm \nVIP Dinner: 8:00pm

SUMMARY:Women Innovating Food
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom our organizers: \nThe gender gap is pervasive across the food industry. Women make the majority of food-purchasing decisions and represent nearly half the entry-level workforce in the food industry\, yet less than a fourth of executives are women and even fewer are women of color. Women are less likely to raise capital and start food companies than men. Beyond the lack of financial support is a widespread lack of recognition and respect\, which at times can go so far as sexual harassment and abuse. What can be done to move forward and uplift the women who are transforming our food system? \nJoin us for a discussion on the unique ways women are transforming our food system with Elly Truesdell (Canopy Foods)\, Valerie Christy (Almanac Insights)\, Jessamyn Rodriguez (Hot Bread Kitchen) and Kimberly Chou (Equity at the Table & Food Book Fair). \nCome network with the community and enjoy food and drinks from women-owned businesses\, including: Zaam Root\, White Moustache\, Eat Offbeat\, Mohawk Drumlin Creamery\, Sun for Soul\, Pilot Kombucha\, NYrture\, Aida\, Ulli’s Oil Mill and Rise! \nAre you a female or gender non-conforming innovator? Add your name to the list: http://bit.ly/womxninfood \nSCHEDULE\n6:30 – 7:30pm: Networking + Bites\n7:30 – 9pm: Roundtable\n9 – 9:30pm: Networking + Bites

SUMMARY:Solution Sprint: #ReimagineHospitality
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nFor many\, the #MeToo movement has unveiled a crisis in the hospitality industry – but this is not a new story\, and the problems go far beyond harassment. On September 24th\, at the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn\, stakeholders from across the food space will convene and form teams to tackle some of the most challenging issues facing the hospitality industry. \nA first-of-its-kind initiative\, the Solution Sprint is a one-day\, crowdsourced event designed to drive resources\, expertise\, and attention to solving community-identified challenges. We looked to the tech and design fields for analogies in collective problem solving\, and modeled the Sprint on a hackathon approach. Teams will be developed in advance\, and each team will work on a pre-selected project. \nProjects  might  include: \n• an industry-wide code of conduct designed for and by our community.\n• a set of novel\, realistic approaches to sexual harassment training.\n• an equity policy that outlines best practices in producing diverse and inclusive panels\, conferences\, and summits. \nWe are currently seeking applications for both Solution Sprint Projects and Sprint Team Members. Applications are open to individuals or organizations that wish to apply. For more information\, please see the Apply tab. If you see an opportunity to evolve the culture\, we want to hear from you! \nThe application deadline HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO AUGUST 31ST and selected projects will be announced on September 10th. \n\nInfo Session August 22nd at GrowNYC  (100 Gold Street\, Suite 3300 NY\, NY 10038) 6-7PM

SUMMARY:A History of\, and Workshop in\, Ecological Design for Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nWhat does it mean to design something? Can you “design” living things? Can we\, or should we\, control “Nature?” Are we part of or apart from Nature? Should we have let Buckminster Fuller build a giant dome over Manhattan in 1960!? In this class\, we’ll explore these big-picture questions via the engineering terms biomimicry\, biodesign\, living machine\, and others within the context of food and agriculture. \nAfter a historically grounded introduction to some core concepts\, we’ll take a tour through a rogue’s gallery of eco-designs from the aquaponics systems of John and Nancy Jack Todd to CRISPR-edited crops\, and from plant factories in major cities to farms on Mars. Then\, we will collectively workshop one future for the city of New York by making design interventions\, of any level of whimsy\, involving edible living things.
