SUMMARY:Open Baking Day at The Old Stone House
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nCome join us for Community Baking Day at the new oven! \nYou can bring any dish or recipe — from cookies to pie to chicken and more — and cook it yourself in the outdoor wood-fired oven. \nYou don’t have to share what you bake\, but you will find many willing taste-testers! Kids are welcome and generally have a great time. Non-bakers are also welcome to come hang out and volunteer for taste-testing duty! \nWe’ll meet at the stone oven next to the Old Stone House (http://theoldstonehouse.org/)\, in the middle of the park on 3rd Street\, between 4th Ave and 5th Ave\, in Brooklyn. \nFiring the oven will start around 9am\, and we’ll bake from noon-ish until 4pm. Drop by any time! Keep in mind\, when it gets busy there may be a wait of an hour or so until a spot opens up in the oven. \nWe’ll be standing around outside the entire time\, so be sure to dress with that in mind. Wear multiple layers\, and be sure to wear warm\, dry boots. \nThe weather can be unpredictable. We will bake even if it is cold or raining\, as long as it is calm out. However\, if it is windy we may cancel. \nIf you’re baking\, a suggested donation of $5 to the Old Stone House for the Oven Fund would be much appreciated — it helps pay for firewood. Thanks!

SUMMARY:White Wine and Cheese at Bedford Cheese Shop
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nIt might come as a surprise\, but white wine is a natural pair for a variety of cheeses. The often acidic and minerally qualities that manifest in white wines lend themselves well to complex flavors and rich textures. \nBut white wine\, like cheese\, is far from simple: Sancerre tastes like limestone and lemons while Riesling is sweet and fruity and Vinho Verde tends bright and effervescent. Then there is California with its Chardonnay and disruptive spirit. Finding those pairings that elevate both the cheese and the wine to new heights takes time (and a lot of trial and error). \nA BCS white wine and cheese pairing class is an educational adventure into the practice of pairing – and an introduction into how milk makes cheese\, how grapes make wine\, and how to make the most of the pairing possibilities. We’ll taste a flight of wines alongside a flight of cheeses selected to complement. Come hungry and curious – we’ll be traveling the world through taste.

After attending culinary school in France\, he worked for multiple Michelin-starred chefs before turning to his true passion: helping cooks everywhere embrace new flavors. \nChef Alex Raij is the person that turned New York City diners on to regional Spanish cuisine. Her Manhattan restaurants El Quinto Pino and Txikito focus on the Basque region\, while her Brooklyn cafe\, La Vara\, explores the Moorish and Jewish influences on Spanish cuisine. Alex runs these restaurants together with her husband Eder Montero. \nHosted by: \nOur Name Is Farm: We are a data oriented digital and experiential media production and marketing company that works with sustainable and good food growers\, producers\, markets and communities to define\, activate and grow their brands. We are New York City based\, but work nationally to support a shared mission of increasing access to and information about local\, wholesome food. \nEmma’s Torch: We are a non-profit social enterprise that provies culinary training and job placements services to refugees in New York City. \nSpecial thanks to Atelier Roquette for generously donating their space for this event!
