SUMMARY:Cookbook Club: Zahav
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nCook through ZAHAV: A WORLD OF ISRAELI COOKING by MICHAEL SOLOMONOV and Steven Cook during the month of AUGUST and drop by with your favorite dish on AUGUST 28th—all are welcome! It’s a potluck party! It’s mad civilized! It gives us a monthly dose of hope for the universe! Come by Archestratus to pick up the book for 20% off now. We have lots of SIGNED copies! \nEver since he opened Zahav in 2008\, chef Michael Solomonov has been turning heads with his original interpretations of modern Israeli cuisine\, attracting notice from the New York Times\, Bon Appétit\, (“an utter and total revelation”)\, and Eater (“Zahav defines Israeli cooking in America”). Zahav showcases the melting-pot cooking of Israel\, especially the influences of the Middle East\, North Africa\, the Mediterranean\, and Eastern Europe. Solomonov’s food includes little dishes called mezze\, such as the restaurant’s insanely popular fried cauliflower; a hummus so ethereal that it put Zahav on the culinary map; and a pink lentil soup with lamb meatballs that one critic called “Jerusalem in a bowl.” It also includes a majestic dome of Persian wedding rice and a whole roasted lamb shoulder with pomegranate and chickpeas that’s a celebration in itself. All Solomonov’s dishes are brilliantly adapted to local and seasonal ingredients. Zahav tells an authoritative and personal story of how Solomonov embraced the food of his birthplace. With its blend of technique and passion\, this book shows readers how to make his food their own.

SUMMARY:Back to School: The Policy and Practice of School Lunch
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom our organizers: \nWhether they are universally free\, served throughout the summer\, or meatless\, school meals are a perennial hot button issue in New York City and beyond. The stakeholders are passionate and diverse: politicians\, unions\, superintendents\, parents\, and of course\, the students. As are the opinions about what facet of school meals are the most important: nutrition\, sourcing\, cost\, and\, last but not least\, whether the food will actually be eaten. \nWith Child Nutrition Reauthorization\, which determines national policy for school food programs\, up before Congress\, and the second anniversary of The Free Lunch for All Program in NYC\, this discussion is as timely as ever. Join Brooklyn Borough President\, Eric Adams\, Founder of Brigaid\, Dan Giusti\, author of Free For All\, Professor Janet Poppendieck\, and former Editor in Chief of Edible Manhattan and Brooklyn\, Ariel Lauren Wilson for an honest discussion the issues surrounding school meals in NYC and beyond. \nAn informal reception with samples of Brigaid’s school lunch menu to follow the conversation.

SUMMARY:TIKI: Flavor and Phenomenon with Shannon Mustipher
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nNo stranger to theater\, Tiki was born out of 1930s Hollywood fantasy and post-WWII South Pacific nostalgia\, becoming shorthand for all things exotic for American audiences. Tiki’s tacky takes on cultural phenomenons as disparate as Cantonese cuisine\, Maori mythology\, and Caribbean spirits\, by way of British colonialism\, created a distinctly American culinary phenomenon. \nTiki’s original personality\, Don the Beachcomber\, who used the phrase “rhum rhapsodies” to describe his unique flavor combinations\, and named drinks like Missionary ‘s Downfall and Three Dots and a Dash\, continues to inspire a new generation of bartenders. “With all its history and tradition\, the style\, nevertheless\, represents freedom and fun in cocktail-building\, with invention and innovation at its heart\,” author\, educator\, and rum expert\, Shannon Mustipher reminds us. \nJoin Shannon Mustipher\, Garret Richard\, Selma Slabiak\, Claire Sprouse\, and Julia Turshen as they celebrate the publication of TIKI\, and the flavor\, phenomenon\, and lasting legacy of Tiki culture.
