SUMMARY:BookBook Club Presents Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nEvery six-ish weeks we will read a new memoir\, collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. \nIn what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels\, Charles Bukowski details the long\, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol\, woman\, and the Los Angeles Public Library’s collection of D.H. Lawrence\, Ham on Rye offers a crude\, brutal\, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast’s coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.\nCheese and wine. Books for sale!

SUMMARY:Unraveling the Recipe
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nThis class is a new iteration of our popular Everyday Improvisation class. In this class\, instead of starting with a grab bag of ingredients\, we begin instruction with a specific dish. Then we identify the separate ingredients and techniques used in that dish\, turning them into starting points for a variety of other original dishes. You’ll learn how to pull apart and build on individual ingredients\, using them to create your own zero-waste\, original meals. \nIn this interactive class\, you’ll learn the fundamentals of practical\, everyday improvisation and kitchen flow; the ability to walk into your kitchen\, without a plan\, and put together something delicious to eat. In just one class\, you’ll become a more resourceful\, nimble\, even sophisticated cook. All skill levels welcome. \nIngredients vary by class. See class schedule for details. \n8 students\, 2 instructors

SUMMARY:Korean Cooking with Gochujang
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nLove Korean food? Come join us in a class all about gochujang\, the hot pepper paste that’s a backbone of Korean cooking. \nAlthough traditional Korean gochujang takes months to ferment outdoors in an earthenware jar\, in this class we’ll make an easy and tasty version you can do right in your own kitchen. With our chili paste we’ll then create two deliciously spicy dishes in class and explore many other ways you can use that gochujang\, an ingredient that’s as versatile as Sriracha and packed with heat and umami flavors. \nWe’ll make: \nAn easy and tasty version of Gochujang\nFresh Cucumber Kimchi\nDak Galbi – Spicy Korean Chicken\, Sweet Potato\, and Rice Cake Stir-fry\nThis class will be a combination of hands-on and demo. We’ll also have small containers for students to take home some gochujang that we make in class. This class is not vegetarian friendly.

SUMMARY:A Saladish Dinner with Ilene Rosen of R+D Foods
DESCRIPTION:From or organizers: \nA “saladish” recipe is like a salad\, and yet so much more. Admission includes dinner\, your very own signed copy of the cookbook\, and limited-edition tote bag. $70 \nMENU\nPumpkin seed hummus\, cucumber shallot dip\, lime salt\, vegetables\nPeas & carrots on papadum\nMini baked\, marinated tofu / Vietnamese salad sandwiches\nRed cabbage & chickpeas with a kick\nOld-fashioned cinnamon sugar donuts
