In this class\, we’ll explore these big-picture questions via the engineering terms biomimicry\, biodesign\, living machine\, and others within the context of food and agriculture. \nAfter a historically grounded introduction to some core concepts\, we’ll take a tour through a rogue’s gallery of eco-designs from the aquaponics systems of John and Nancy Jack Todd to CRISPR-edited crops\, and from plant factories in major cities to farms on Mars. Then\, we will collectively workshop one future for the city of New York by making design interventions\, of any level of whimsy\, involving edible living things.

You will learn how to use open-source\, free technology and off-the-shelf electronics to check on your plants and their progress from anywhere\, using any device\, 24/7. You will customize your own “plant dashboard” to monitor the temperature\, humidity\, light\, and soil moisture\, and even learn about automatic watering tools. \nIncluded in the workshop is a brief intro to internet of things\, basic electronics\, and programming — but don’t worry if you’re not already familiar with any of these. The goal of the workshop is to help you better understand what your plants need to thrive in any setting.

We’ll discuss the anatomy of a honey bee; the biology and life cycle of the colony; as well as equipment\, hive architecture and basics in beekeeping safety. \nThis workshop is perfect for those of you who are considering beekeeping for the first time and want to learn more before bee season is in full swing. If this is the year for you to dive into beekeeping\, this is a great place to start! \nAbout Carin Zinter\nCarin is a beekeeper and educator who\, through her business\, C & C Orchards\, provides raw\, local honey to restaurants and pastry chefs in the northeast. In 2017\, C & C Orchards Wildflower Honey won a Good Food Award! In addition to keeping bees herself\, Carin is the lead educator for Brooklyn Grange’s season-long beekeeping training program. She is certified as a Master Beekeeper through the Eastern Apicultural Society (EAS).

Every person gets at least one pack of seeds for free. \nView seeds in their whole form—you can clean seeds yourself and take some home. A great activity for children. Talk with other gardeners about what they plan to plant! Information on how to save seeds\, how to plant\, and why heirloom and organic seeds are important\, compost training\, and some garden books to browse for ideas. Free catalogs from great seed companies. \nFor sale: Hudson Valley Seed Co. Art packs—selected for city growing. \nFedco Seeds—we will share the seeds we plant in our OSH gardens—bring envelopes or containers so we can divide packs.
