SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly: Ecology\, The Original Commons
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:\n\n\nGreen Series: Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly\n\nEcology: The Original Commons\n\nEcology is the original commons\, the basis and ultimate standard of relational and thoroughly interdependent life systems. How can we learn from ecology ways to improve the contemporary commons—be it public or civic space or the commons of knowledge? And what aspects of biological life are currently under threat in our public sphere?\n\nJoin ecological artist Mary Mattingly in a talk where she explores the notion of “the commons” as it has informed her artistic practice and her ways of engaging with other citizens through public art projects. Mattingly will discuss previous works and her current commissioned living sculpture at Central Library\, part of the exhibition Stars Down to Earth: Mary Mattingly & Dario Robleto. From wonders of the cosmos to urgent questions around habitable futures on earth\, this exhibition brings together the scientific inquiries and complex visual systems of these two artists\, who also\, through their art\, engage with the world as citizen scientists and ethicists.\n\nA soon-to-be-announced guest speaker will join for a discussion with Mattingly on science\, ethics and the commons for the second portion of the program\, followed by audience Q & A.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is made possible through the generous support of Whole Foods Market.

SUMMARY:Empty Waters: The Future of Seafood in America
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nThis year\, Long Island baymen were shocked to discover that on the opening day of scallop season\, most of the scallops in Peconic Bay were dead. Meanwhile\, Gulf oysters are dying\, and wild shrimp—once plentiful along much of the US coastline—can only be found in certain pockets of the South. In a series of stories published in October and November of 2019\, the New York Times reported on these particular instances of seafood devastation taking place in our waters. \nJoin award-winning New York Times writer Melissa Clark as she leads a thought-provoking conversation with oyster expert Julie Qiu\, Sea to Table founder & CEO Sean Dimin\, and journalist Charity Robey as they unpack the complex issues that impact our seafood supply and discuss possible solutions for the future. \nThe panel conversation will be followed by a reception featuring beverages from Talea Beer Co. and sustainable seafood dishes courtesy of Australis Barramundi and Sea to Table.

SUMMARY:Intro to Spirulina: Grow Your Own Microalgae
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nCome learn how to grow spirulina\, a microalgae that the UN once called “the best food for the future.” Well\, the future is now and growing this spiral-shaped microalgae is an easy way to introduce this nutrient-rich food into your life. Our 60-minute workshop will cover the basic necessities for how to cultivate spirulina\, with time for Q&A as well. \nWe will examine the materials needed\, compare methods\, and look at both the ‘classical’ open pond systems as well as the high-tech bioreactors designed to grow algae under more controlled conditions.

As each class focuses on a different element of aquaponics\, you can sign up for both (via this page) or just one (follow the links to individual classes below). \nClass 1 (Sat\, Feb 2): Science & Biology \nLearn the science behind aquaponics – the key to getting started. \n\nWhat considerations need to be taken into account to ensure a healthy operation?\nHow does each living organism survive and add value to the larger ecosystem?\nHow is balance achieved?\n\nYou’ll learn all this and more\, from the comforts of AgTech X – New York’s only co-working lab dedicated to sustainable food & agriculture. \nClass 2 (Sat\, Feb 9): Best Practices & DIY Build \nStart the day with an overview of best practices for managing an aquaponics operation. Then dive in by constructing two different DIY aquaponic systems. You’ll learn how to build these recirculating units out of simple materials under the guidance of Yemi Amu and her team at Oko Farms. Finally\, you’ll leave with a full materials list and the confidence to get your own home system up and running. \nAbout the Instructor \nYemi Amu is the co-founder of Oko Farms and the Farm Manager at the Moore Street Farm. She directs all of Oko Farms’ programs including education\, design/build projects and community related activities. She has facilitated the creation and maintenance of 20 edible spaces (in NYC) at schools and community organizations including a rooftop farm in Crown Heights and a 1/4 acre farm at the Weeksville Heritage Center that included poultry and bees.

SUMMARY:Greening the Concrete Jungle: An Intro to Green Roofs with Alan Burchell
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \n\n\n\n\n\nAn estimated 40\,000 acres of roof space sit atop New York’s buildings — so why is it that less than 1% incorporate greenery? Combining common practices with emerging technologies and recent incentives from the City\, we now have the resources to change this and\, in doing so\, help solve key challenges related to food\, water\, energy\, and biodiversity that negatively impact NYC today. \nIn our newest rendition of this class\, we will examine a range of topics as they pertain to Green Roofs\, including: \n\nSystem Types\nElements & Technology\nDesign Considerations\nBenefits\nInstallation\nIncentives\nSolar Integration\n\nYou’ll leave the class with a true understanding of the potential that green roofs can play in transforming our cities\, and some tangible suggestions for where to turn next. \nAbout the instructor: Alan Burchell is the founder of Urbanstrong\, a full-service green building technology firm that designs\, builds\, and maintains a range of green infrastructure solutions. \n*Are you an architect or green building professional? This presentation is eligible for a 1-hour continuing education credit with AIA CES\, LA CES\, and GBCI CES.

SUMMARY:Agritecture Xchange Preview Pt. 1: Greenhouse or Vertical Farm?
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nAs a lead-up to Agritecture Xchange – www.agritecture.com/xchange – we will be hosting a series of mini-talks on topics that challenge our presumptions. \nFor our first talk\, Luuk Graamans of The Netherlands will present a performance assessment of plant factories (vertical farms) compared with traditional greenhouses\, analyzing resource usage in lettuce production. \nLuuk is a building engineer enthusiastic about investigating and designing resilient cities of the future through an interdisciplinary approach. The current focus of his work is the interface of building engineering and agriculture through a PhD position at TU Delft and Wageningen UR. His ultimate goal is to precisely quantify the resource requirement of plant factories and increase their performance through building design.
