SUMMARY:In Conversation with Carla Lalli Music\, plus snacks!
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom our organizers: \n“Shop\, cook\, eat\, repeat. I’ve now realized that the hunt for peak ingredients is the way I shop for meal ideas\, because I can see from the start where I want things to go. When something looks good—vibrant\, colorful\, abundant\, or in fleeting supply—I cycle through a short list of universal cooking techniques in my arsenal and imagine how each one could transform what I’m looking at.” \nCome join chef\, author\, and Bon Appetit food director Carla Lalli Music for a conversation\, Q + A\, and signing of her new cookbook Where Cooking Begins: Uncomplicated Recipes to Make You a Great Cook. Mingle with the Carla while munching on a cookbook inspired arancine (pork\, scallion\, and snap pea) + a flaky slice of seasonal fruit galette. Additional copies of Where Cooking Begins will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:pineapple NY presents: all the pastabilities
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nMaking pasta from scratch is intimidating. So is making new friends. But making pasta with new friends? Doesn’t sound so bad now\, does it? \nPasta is all about versatility: It literally tastes good with anything\, is made with two humble ingredients\, and exists in hundreds of forms. From strozzapreti to agnolotti\, the pastabilities are endless. \nJoin pineapple NY at Brooklyn Kitchen for our very first hands-on workshop\, where we will learn how to make our own pasta from Pasta Social Club’s founder Meryl Feinstein\, in partnership with Bronwen Kinzler-Britton\, both formerly on the pasta production team at Misi. Together\, we’ll also chat about the contemplative precision of handmade pasta\, why perfect-looking food is mostly overrated\, and how cooking together builds community better than anything else. Oh\, and by “hands-on” we mean hands sprinkling\, kneading\, rolling\, shaping\, and ultimately\, eating. \nAfter all the work has been done\, chefs Meryl and Bronwen will cook up our creations — aggressively al dente\, always — in their homemade sauces using Mutti tomatoes\, Italy’s #1 brand. Then it’s twirl-and-taste time. \nWe’ll also have women-powered Italian eats provided by Caviar to complete the feast!

SUMMARY:Rediscovering Italian with Stacy Adimando and Katie Parla
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nItalian food always seems to be at a crossroads between tradition and modernity. Take the Slow Food movement for example: founded in Italy\, Slow Food takes the traditional concept of locality and translates it to the modern consumer who may be more out of touch with where their food comes from. This navigation is especially true amongst Italian American communities\, where the word authenticity (as a both statement and question) has become a cornerstone of culinary and cultural dialogue. \nKatie Parla and Stacy Adimando have each sought to map and bridge the divide between traditions and the modern day. In Food of the Italian South\, Katie delves deeper into the Boot than many chefs outside of the region or country have explored before\, shining light on disappearing dishes full of life. Adimando’s Piatti finds inspiration in the classic art of antipasti\, which has almost been distilled to an afterthought in Italian food in America\, seeking to breathe new life into this vibrant tradition of hosting and hospitality. \nJoin Stacy Adimando and Katie Parla as they bridge the gaps between traditions and modernity\, illuminating the forgotten aspects of Italian food\, as well as the heart of both books and Italian cuisine\, old and new: the power of simplicity. \nAn informal reception with book signings\, and small bites from both of the books will follow. \nThis program is part of our Global Cultures\, Global Cuisines program series

SUMMARY:Not Your Grandma’s Cooking: Celebrating Immigrant Mothers\, Daughters\, and Authenticity
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nAuthenticity is a sticky word. Everyone has a claim to the right or wrong way to make any given dish\, from culture to culture\, and generation to generation. What we find\, time and again\, is the supreme personalness of food. What we eat\, why\, and with who\, defines us. If we believe that food is culture\, this too means that food is family. \nThe story told in Indian-ish\, the new cookbook from Priya Krishna\, is an old story. A person moves to a new country and thinks of home\, which often means they dream about the food of their parents. In trying to recreate that food\, from memory or with their family across the world\, they create something new. New ingredients\, new appliances\, and even new taste buds\, shape this new cuisine\, born out of necessity\, nostalgia\, and creativity. This cuisine is then passed on\, and tweaked for newer taste buds. And so on. \nRitu Krishna\, Priya’s mom\, is at the heart of Indian-ish. Her new cuisine\, which is both Indian and American\, was created with love\, innovation\, and authenticity. Join Priya Krishna\, and the mother-daughter duo of Korai Kitchen: Nur-E Rahman and Nur-E Farhana\, to celebrate the launch of Indian-ish and the special bond between immigrant mothers\, their families\, and their new cuisines. \nAn informal reception with book signing and light bites to follow. \nThis program is part of our Global Cultures\, Global Cuisines program series

SUMMARY:In Pursuit of Flavor: Celebrating Edna Lewis
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nMiss Edna Lewis was a farm-to-table chef before it became a fine-dining movement. She was the Grand Dame of Southern cooking before it became a national restaurant phenomenon. She was an intimate\, lyrical food writer before the rise of the personal\, Internet food essay. Her influence\, much like her person\, is quietly impressive\, powerful\, and only recently getting due recognition. \nA child of the South who spent significant time in New York City\, Miss Lewis never strayed far from her rural Virginia roots. Born into a farming community founded by formerly enslaved people – including her grandfather – Lewis told stories of her childhood and her beloved South in her cookbooks\, interspersing anecdotes and recipes throughout. \nIn her new Foreword of the reissued In Pursuit of Flavor (Knopf 2019)\, Chef Mashama Bailey describes the vividness and immediacy of the work: “Miss Lewis showcases her expertise and techniques by taking us on a journey through her childhood. She brings to life the entire farmland as it was seen by someone who lived off the land. She picks fruits and vegetables and shows us how to prepare them for the cupboard. She shows us how to preserve the bounty of the season for later. She takes us to the river and creeks to teach us about the local catches.” \nJoin Kia Damon\, Mary Goodbody\, Francis Lam\, Therese Nelson\, Mayukh Sen\, and Sara B. Franklin\, as they celebrate Edna Lewis’s legacy as a chef and a person\, and the reissue of In Pursuit of Flavor. An informal reception with small bites will follow.
