SUMMARY:BookBook Club Presents The Vegetarian by Han Kang
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nEvery six-ish weeks we will read a new memoir\,collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. \nBefore the nightmares began\, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary\, controlled life. But the dreams—invasive images of blood and brutality—torture her\, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It’s a small act of independence\, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband\, her brother-in-law and sister each fight to reassert their control\, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that’s become sacred to her. Soon their attempts turn desperate\, subjecting first her mind\, and then her body\, to ever more intrusive and perverse violations\, sending Yeong-hye spiraling into a dangerous\, bizarre estrangement\, not only from those closest to her\, but also from herself.\nCheese and wine. Books for sale!

SUMMARY:A South Indian Cooking Class
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nTogether we’ll be making delicious regional specialties from the south of India! Rohan Kamicheril of the Tiffin Club will give you the hands-on low-down on using south Indian spices\, grains\, herbs\, cooking techniques\, and more\, and we’ll end with a delicious brunch (paired with South Indian filter coffee\, naturally). \nOn the menu: \nWe’ll start with huli avalaki\, a tamarind-tinged dish of beaten rice\, peanuts\, and fried lentils that’s ground to a couscous-like meal and served with brussels sprouts palya\, a lovely green tangle of shaved sprouts sautéed with warm spices in fragrant coconut oil. You’ll also learn how to make an earthy\, spicy\, herb-rich fish saaru\, packed with black pepper\, cilantro\, and ginger. We’ll finish with a bowl of warm payasam\, a milk-based rice noodle pudding studded with toasted cashews and ghee-fried sour cherries. And after we’re done cooking and eating we’ll send you home with a little pamphlet of recipes and a little treat.

SUMMARY:Nancy Singleton Hachisu and Japan: The Cookbook
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nThe Brooklyn Kitchen has long had a love affair with Japan. We began selling Japanese knives in 2007\, working with Kikuichi\, a family company tracing its roots back to 1267 that started making kitchen knives when Samurais were outlawed by the Emperor in the 1860s. We’ve been to Japan at least 5 times now\, and have incorporated Japanese flavors and pantry staples into our everyday cooking. \nWith limited public appearances during her US book release tour\, we are excited to announce a special night with our friend Nancy Singleton Hachisu\, a James Beard Award-nominated author of two previous cookbooks: Japanese Farm Food and Preserving the Japanese Way and now Japan: The Cookbook. Widely respected as an authority on Japanese cooking\, both in Japan and the United States\, we’re so excited to host her at The Brooklyn Kitchen! \nWe are honored and lucky to have made friends with Nancy\, a cook and scholar who has been living on an organic farm outside Tokyo for the last 30 years. Nancy knows more about Japanese food than some natives. She has taken Harry\, one of our founders\, on a tour of makers of miso\, shoyu\, and to a tea farm (She knows a lot of secrets!). \nIt’s no surprise that Nancy was chosen by Phaidon to create the Bible of Japanese cuisine. This book has been decades in the making. From Nancy’s determined immersion in Japanese artisanal food culture to seeking out the best producers in a country that is so hyper regional\, you might not know what’s made one town over. \nDuring the event\, discover the history behind Japan: The Cookbook\, enjoy beverages and light snacks! Books will be available for sale.

SUMMARY:BookBook Club Presents Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nEvery six-ish weeks we will read a new memoir\, collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. \nIn what is widely hailed as the best of his many novels\, Charles Bukowski details the long\, lonely years of his own hardscrabble youth in the raw voice of alter ego Henry Chinaski. From a harrowingly cheerless childhood in Germany through acne-riddled high school years and his adolescent discoveries of alcohol\, woman\, and the Los Angeles Public Library’s collection of D.H. Lawrence\, Ham on Rye offers a crude\, brutal\, and savagely funny portrait of an outcast’s coming-of-age during the desperate days of the Great Depression.\nCheese and wine. Books for sale!

SUMMARY:Ilene Rosen and Helen Rosner on Saladish
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n\n\nJoin Ilene Rosen as she celebrates the publication of her first book SALADISH: A Crunchier\, Grainier\, Herbier\, Heartier\, Tastier Way with Vegetables. She will be in conversation with Helen Rosner about her passion for produce\, her fearless approach to mixing flavors and ingredients\, her career in food and much more. A variety of small bites will be served featuring an all-season vegetable they both adore. \n*This event is free and open to the public and books will be available for sale and signing.* \nCooking the saladish way has been Ilene Rosen’s genius since she unveiled the first kale salad at New York’s City Bakery almost two decades ago\, and now in SALADISH she shares 100 fresh and creative recipes\, organized seasonally. Her “saladish” recipes are like a salad\, and yet so much more. They start with an unexpectedly wide range of ingredients\, such as Japanese eggplants\, broccoli rabe\, shirataki noodles\, Bosc pears\, and chrysanthemum leaves. They emphasizes contrasting textures—toothsome\, fluffy\, crunchy\, crispy\, hefty. And marry contrasting flavors—rich\, sharp\, sweet\, and salty. \nIlene Rosen is the chef\, creative director\, and co-owner of R&D Foods\, a specialty grocery shop featuring her prepared foods that opened in Prospect Heights\, Brooklyn\, in 2013. Previously\, Rosen spent fifteen years as the savory chef at City Bakery\, where she basked in the glory of seasonal produce and honed her craft creating the salad bar that gained a cult following. Rosen resides in Brooklyn\, a seven-minute walk from her shop and a two-minute walk from the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket\, where she continues to be exuberant about fruits and vegetables. \nHelen Rosner is the New Yorker’s digital food correspondent\, covering chefs\, restaurants\, cookbooks\, and culinary culture. Previously an editor at Eater\, Saveur\, and New York Magazine\, and a founder of the short-lived but influential site Eat Me Daily\, her work can also be found in Afar\, Racked\, The Awl\, Departures\, and more. Her essay “On Chicken Tenders” was the winner of the 2016 James Beard award. She lives in Brooklyn.

SUMMARY:BookBook Club Presents: Coming to My Senses
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nWe are very excited to announce our second pick for the new Book Club series. Every six-ish weeks we will read a new memoir\, collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. Our next pick is Coming to My Senses by Alice Waters\, a book we are excited to cozy with this winter. \nWhen Alice Waters opened the doors of her “little French restaurant” in Berkeley\, California\, in 1971 at the age of 27\, no one ever anticipated the indelible mark it would leave on the culinary landscape – Alice least of all. Fueled in equal parts by naiveté and a relentless pursuit of beauty and pure flavor\, she turned her passion project into an iconic institution that redefined American cuisine for generations of chefs and food lovers. \nIn Coming to My Senses\, Alice retraces the events that led her to 1517 Shattuck Avenue and the tumultuous times that emboldened her to find her own voice as a cook when the prevailing food culture was embracing convenience and uniformity. Moving from a repressive suburban upbringing to Berkeley in 1964 at the height of the free speech movement and campus unrest\, she was drawn into a bohemian circle of charismatic figures whose views on design\, politics\, film\, and food would ultimately inform the unique culture on which Chez Panisse was founded. \nThere will be lots-o-free-cheese and wine for sale!
