SUMMARY:Book Party! Food of the Italian South with Katie Parla
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nCome join Katie Parla\, acclaimed culinary journalist and foremost authority on Italy\, to celebrate her latest cookbook FOOD of the ITALIAN SOUTH: Recipes for Classic\, Disappearing\, and Lost Dishes. \nFood of the Italian South goes where no English language cookbook has gone before and delves deeply into the culinary traditions of the Italian South\, a region best known for its rustic and romantic cuisine. Parla shares both historical and cultural insights that encapsulate the miles of rugged beaches\, sheep-dotted mountains\, meditatively quiet towns\, and\, most important\, soul-satisfying recipes—some of which are true to the originals and others that have been reimagined in a modern way.

SUMMARY:Dinner with The Nimble Cook
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nJoin us for a dinner by a chef who believes “A scrap is just food you haven’t figured out how to use.” With her first book\, The Nimble Cook \, Ronna Welsh will take cooks from “there’s nothing to eat” to spectacular dishes. Instead of shopping for a rigid weekly menu\, a nimble cook shops for ingredients\, and thinks of them as springboards to many dishes\, some unplanned. \nOn the MENU: \nPoached Garlic in Brown Butter with Flaky Salt\, Handmade Water Crackers\, Braised and Pickled Kale Stems \nEarly Spring Vegetables in Cheese Stock with Fresh Herbs \nWhole Roasted Market Fish with Pickled Garlic Vinaigrette \nRicotta Custard with Dried Lemon Honey and Balsamic Figs \n_______ \nSigned copies of THE NIMBLE COOK will be available for purchase. \nWe sell beer and wine. \nThis is NOT a BYOB establishment. \nPlease arrive promptly at 7pm. \n“Ronna Welsh cooks the way I do: efficiently\, vigilantly\, skillfully\, and frugally. This is foremost a teaching bookthat makes you think about ingredients rather than recipes. Understanding how versatile ingredients are so you can incorporate them in any recipe is the proper\, intelligent way to cook.”—Jacques Pépin

SUMMARY:BookBook Club: Home Cooking: A Writer in the Kitchen by Laurie Colwin

SUMMARY:TOC! BLACK LEOPARD\, RED WOLF with Riverhead Table and Food Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nWe are THRILLED to announce our first Tables of Contents dinner of 2019\, an epic collaboration with our friends and co-conspirators at Riverhead Table and Food Book Fair hosted at Egg Restaurant. \nFor one night only\, chef Evan Hanczor and author Marlon James will collaborate to present a multi-course experience inspired by Marlon’s blockbuster new novel BLACK LEOPARD\, RED WOLF. \nA stunning first installment in Marlon’s emerging Dark Star Trilogy\, BLACK LEOPARD\, RED WOLF has drawn comparisons to the world-creating of Tolkien and dubbed an “African Game of Thrones”. It is a sprawling\, sensual\, disorienting\, and thrilling journey of a read\, and it’s going to make quite a meal. \nWe’re keeping a lid on the menu til the night of the meal\, but you can expect to dip into 8 courses (!!!) inspired by the book’s lush scenes\, such as \nraw and charred goat \nugali porridge \nsorghum bread \ntextures and shades of green \ndates and nuts \nand more. \nTickets are $125/pp (+ tax\, service included)\, and include all food and drink for the evening\, plus a special edition enamel pin produced by Riverhead. Evan and Marlon will lead a discussion and Q&A at the end of the meal\, and there are bound to be a handful of surprises to come. We have amazing beverage pairings from Forthave Spirits\, Forge Cellars\, and Brooklyn Brewery\, and memorable takeaways including custom BLRW enamel pins and candles with a custom-created BLRW scent made by Hi Wildflower. It’s a damn steal! \nAs usual\, our neighbors McNally Jackson will be in the house selling signed copies of the book and Marlon’s other titles (including the Man Booker Prize-winning A BRIEF HISTORY OF SEVEN KILLINGS). \nAAAAAND\, $10 from every ticket will go to support One Moore Book\, author (and TOC alum!) Wayétu Moore’s nonprofit that publishes culturally sensitive and educational stories for children of countries with low literacy rates and underrepresented cultures. \nSquarespace and Food Book Fair have created an event-specific site to keep up with and dig into the TOC events this month. Check it out here! www.tablesofcontentsdinner.com \nHuge thanks to Riverhead\, Food Book Fair\, Squarespace\, The Brooklyn Brewery\, Forthave\, and Forge for their support of this meal! \nHope to see you there\, \nTOC

SUMMARY:The Geography of Gumbo: From One Pot\, Many
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nGumbo is hotly contested ground\, with many laying claim to its invention and tasty evolution. Some cooks use okra\, some use filé\, and some a roux as a gumbo thickener.. Some use sausage and chicken\, some shellfish\, and some a combination of both. No matter which way you cook it\, this dish reflects the culinary story of America; as Dr. Jessica Harris points out\, gumbo is “a case where these parts make an extraordinary whole without totally melting .” Or as Ken Wells writes in his new book\, Gumbo Life\, gumbo “is the story of jazz but writ in food.” \nThough Louisiana is its symbolic home\, the geography of this rich brown soup is as varied as its ingredients. The word gumbo itself comes from the word for okra in the Bantu languages of West Africa. Filé\, or ground sassafras leaves\, is a Choctaw ingredient. Roux is a French technique by way of Creole and Cajun cooks. \nAnd how do other one pot dishes compare? Is it still gumbo if it is made in Missouri\, Chicago\, or Brooklyn? Come learn about the ins and outs of gumbo from our panel featuring Nicole Taylor\, Adrienne Cheatham\, and Ken Wells\, and celebrate the launch of Wells’s Gumbo Life: Tales from the Roux Bayou\, which arrives just in time for Mardi Gras! \nAn informal reception with book signing and a tasting of various gumbos will follow. \nThis program is part of our Eat•Drink•Read series\, sponsored by W. W. Norton.

SUMMARY:Cookbook Club: Vibration Cooking by Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nCook through Vibration Cooking by Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor during the month of FEBRUARY and drop by with your favorite dish on FEBRUARY 26th—all are welcome! It’s a potluck party! It’s mad civilized! It gives us a monthly dose of hope for the universe! Come by Archestratus to pick up the book for 20% off now. \nVibration Cooking was first published in 1970\, not long after the term “soul food” gained common use. While critics were quick to categorize her as a proponent of soul food\, Smart-Grosvenor wanted to keep the discussion of her cookbook/memoir focused on its message of food as a source of pride and validation of black womanhood and black “consciousness raising.” \nIn 1959\, at the age of nineteen\, Smart-Grosvenor sailed to Europe\, “where the bohemians lived and let live.” Among the cosmopolites of radical Paris\, the Gullah girl from the South Carolina low country quickly realized that the most universal lingua franca is a well-cooked meal. As she recounts a cool cat’s nine lives as chanter\, dancer\, costume designer\, and member of the Sun Ra Solar-Myth Arkestra\, Smart-Grosvenor introduces us to a rich cast of characters. We meet Estella Smart\, Vertamae’s grandmother and connoisseur of mountain oysters; Uncle Costen\, who lived to be 112 and knew how to make Harriet Tubman Ragout; and Archie Shepp\, responsible for Collard Greens à la Shepp\, to name a few. She also tells us how poundcake got her a marriage proposal (she didn’t accept) and how she perfected omelettes in Paris\, enchiladas in New Mexico\, biscuits in Mississippi\, and feijoida in Brazil. “When I cook\, I never measure or weigh anything\,” writes Smart-Grosvenor. “I cook by vibration.” \n___ \nArchestratus community events are free of charge! Beer and wine for sale.

SUMMARY:BookBook Club: No Recipe: Cooking as Spiritual Practice by Edward Espe Brown
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nEvery six-ish weeks we read a new memoir\, a collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. Then we discuss. \n“Making your love manifest\, transforming your spirit\, good heart\, and able hands into food is a great undertaking\,” writes renowned chef and Zen priest Edward Espe Brown\, “one that will nourish you in the doing\, in the offering\, and in the eating.” With No Recipe: Cooking as Spiritual Practice\, Brown beautifully blends expert cooking advice with thoughtful reflections on meaning\, joy\, and life itself. \nReading Brown’s witty and engaging collection of essays is like learning to cook—and meditate—with your own personal chef and Zen teacher. Drawing from a lifetime of experience\, he invites us into his home and kitchen to explore how cooking and eating can be paths to awakening. Baking\, cutting\, chopping\, and tasting are not seen as rigid techniques\, but as opportunities to find joy and satisfaction in the present moment. “Forget the rules and forget what you’ve been told\,” teaches Brown. “Discover for yourself by tasting\, testing\, experimenting\, and experiencing.” \nFrom soil to seed and preparation to plate\, No Recipe brings us a collection of timeless teachings on awakening in the sacred space of the kitchen. \nCheese and wine. Books for sale! BookBook Club titles are 20% off.

SUMMARY:TOC January: Novey! Sital! Pitoniak!
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nReaders of Content! \nNew Year √\nNew Books √\nNew Bites √\nSame Biscuits √ \nWe can’t wait to see y’all at our first TOC reading of 2019 at Egg! 2018 was a special year for us\, and we have a LOT in the works for 2019 that we can’t wait to tell you about. But we must wait. So we’ll just tell you about our dope upcoming reading on January 30th instead. \nIdra Novey (THOSE WHO KNEW)\, Krystal Sital (SECRETS WE KEPT: THREE WOMEN OF TRINIDAD) and Anna Pitoniak (NECESSARY PEOPLE) will be kicking off our year\, and chef Evan Hanczor will pair each reading with a textually-inspired snack. A Q&A and discussion between Evan and the authors will round out the night. \nFor THOSE WHO KNOW (see what we did there?)\, we’re changing things up a little this year. One frustration we’ve noticed in the past is an RSVP attrition rate that leaves us with sad\, empty seats\, a bummer for us and our authors alike. To try to avoid that\, we’re now selling tickets online! We’ve also nudged the price up to $15 \, which still covers the readings\, snacks\, and one drink ticket per person (and is still\, in our minds\, one of the best deals in town). We’ll reserve a handful of seats for walk-ins\, but since the readings have been in the habit of filling up quickly we highly recommend snagging those tickets ahead of time. \nAdditional drinks (beer\, wine\, and local hard cider from Eve’s Cidery) will be available for purchase\, and McNally Jackson will be in the house selling books as usual! \nFeel free to write us at contentables@gmail.com with any questions. Hope to see you at the table. \nT.O.C.
