SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly: Ecology\, The Original Commons
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:\n\n\nGreen Series: Artist Talk with Mary Mattingly\n\nEcology: The Original Commons\n\nEcology is the original commons\, the basis and ultimate standard of relational and thoroughly interdependent life systems. How can we learn from ecology ways to improve the contemporary commons—be it public or civic space or the commons of knowledge? And what aspects of biological life are currently under threat in our public sphere?\n\nJoin ecological artist Mary Mattingly in a talk where she explores the notion of “the commons” as it has informed her artistic practice and her ways of engaging with other citizens through public art projects. Mattingly will discuss previous works and her current commissioned living sculpture at Central Library\, part of the exhibition Stars Down to Earth: Mary Mattingly & Dario Robleto. From wonders of the cosmos to urgent questions around habitable futures on earth\, this exhibition brings together the scientific inquiries and complex visual systems of these two artists\, who also\, through their art\, engage with the world as citizen scientists and ethicists.\n\nA soon-to-be-announced guest speaker will join for a discussion with Mattingly on science\, ethics and the commons for the second portion of the program\, followed by audience Q & A.\n\n\n\n\nThis program is made possible through the generous support of Whole Foods Market.

SUMMARY:Re:Setting the Table: The Future of Chinese Food and Drink in America
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nMOFAD’s Chow Exhibition will soon be closing\, but Chinese cuisine’s American story is just beginning. Join writers Serena Dai and Derek Sandhaus and chef Lucas Sin for a spirited conversation on the future of food and drink in the United States. \nOur panel will explore the traditional role of food and alcohol in Chinese culture\, and how social and historical circumstances have shaped the way diners encountered it. Why are Chinese take-out restaurants\, once a popular mainstay of urban American dining\, closing at alarming rates? Why aren’t more people talking about Baiju\, the world’s most consumed liquor? And how are trends in China influencing restaurants in America? Find out the answers to these questions\, and many more. \nThe discussion will be followed by a reception with drinks and bites courtesy of MOFAD and Ming River Sichuan Baiju. Derek Sandhaus will also be signing his new book\, Drunk in China: Baiju and the World’s Oldest Drinking Culture.

SUMMARY:BookBook Club: L'Appart: The Delights and Disasters of Making My Paris Home...
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nEvery six-ish weeks we read a new memoir\, a collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. Then we discuss. Read through L’APPART: THE DELIGHTS AND DISASTERS OF MAKING MY PARIS HOME by David Lebovitz through NOV + DEC and join us on JAN 15! Drop by the shop to get a copy for 20% off. \nAbout the book: \nBestselling author and world-renowned chef David Lebovitz continues to mine the rich subject of his evolving ex-Pat life in Paris\, using his perplexing experiences in apartment renovation as a launching point for stories about French culture\, food\, and what it means to revamp one’s life. Includes dozens of new recipes. \nWhen David Lebovitz began the project of updating his apartment in his adopted home city\, he never imagined he would encounter so much inexplicable red tape while contending with perplexing work ethic and hours. Lebovitz maintains his distinctive sense of humor with the help of his partner Romain\, peppering this renovation story with recipes from his Paris kitchen. In the midst of it all\, he reveals the adventure that accompanies carving out a place for yourself in a foreign country—under baffling conditions—while never losing sight of the magic that inspired him to move to the City of Light many years ago\, and to truly make his home there.

There are easy and more complex versions for most dishes\, vegetarian options\, side dishes\, sub-dishes\, and strategies for leftovers. \nRuhlman reflects on the ways that cooking from scratch brings people together\, how it can calm the nerves and focus the mind\, and how it nourishes us\, body and soul.

SUMMARY:BookBook Club: There but for the by ALI SMITH
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nEvery six-ish weeks we read a new memoir\, a collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. Then we discuss. \nAbout the book: \nWhen a dinner-party guest named Miles locks himself in an upstairs room and refuses to come out\, he sets off a media frenzy. He also sets in motion a mesmerizing puzzle of a novel\, one that harnesses acrobatic verbal playfulness to a truly affecting story. \nMiles communicates only by cryptic notes slipped under the door. We see him through the eyes of four people who barely know him\, ranging from a precocious child to a confused elderly woman. But while the characters’ wit and wordplay soar\, their story remains profoundly grounded. As it probes our paradoxical need for both separation and true connection\, There but for the balances cleverness with compassion\, the surreal with the deeply\, movingly real\, in a way that only Ali Smith can.

SUMMARY:Cookbook Club: Extra Helping: Recipes for Building Community One Dish at a Time
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nAuthor JANET REICH ELSBACH will be joining us at this month’s CookBook Club! \nCook through EXTRA HELPING: RECIPES FOR BUILDING A COMMUNITY ONE DISH AT A TIME by JANET REICH ELSBACH during the month of JUNE and drop by with your favorite dish on JUNE 26th—all are welcome! It’s a potluck party! It’s mad civilized! It gives us a monthly dose of hope for the universe! Come by Archestratus to pick up the book for 20% off now. \nThere is no more essential place to show up for people than on the plate. Extra Helping is for anyone who wants to respond to the challenge of baby announcements\, PTO meal chains\, and CaringBridge alerts with compassion and creativity; who wants to send something to a niece overcome by finals week or a neighbor who is grieving; and whose limits of time and other resources leave them feeling more confused than inspired. With recipes tailored to meet many of the dietary modifications that illness and recovery (not to mention modern life) often entail\, Extra Helping walks you\, the helpful friend\, through cooking for people who are dealing with illness\, recovery\, and loss\, or celebrating babies\, birthdays\, and new homes. Personal stories from the front lines of care\, shortcuts for the time-strapped\, and sidebars full of tips and embellishments round out a collection of over 70 recipes\, aiding readers in developing a style of caregiving all their own. Extra Helping frames a philosophy of support\, a personal identity of tending\, a creative and unique-to-you style of saying “I am here for you”—one delivery at a time. \n“Reading through Extra Helping\, it’s clear that Janet Elsbach understands that cooking is not just a way to support people who are doing important work\, it’s also an act of love.”—Julia Turshen\, author of Feeding the Resistance

SUMMARY:TOC June 13: Jenny Xie! Crystal Hana Kim! Kirmen Uribe!
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nOur June TOC reading rises a week before the solstice\, when the food world’s signs of spring (pickled ramps and lilac syrup packed in the fridge\, newborn calves\, a flush of cucumbers in the garden) are moving towards the flavors of summer. We can’t wait for the first early summer crop of authors to fill the room this month. \nWe were introduced to Kirmen Uribe (BILBAO – NEW YORK – BILBAO) by a pair of great chefs (Alex Raij and Eder Montero of Txikito and St Julivert) and are thrilled to cook from his Basque country scenes. He’ll be reading alongside every-best-of-2018 listee Crystal Hana Kim (IF YOU LEAVE ME) and National Book Award Finalist Jenny Xie (EYE LEVEL) bringing her gorgeous\, persimmon-skinned poems to the room. \nAbout the Tables of Contents reading series: \nTables of Contents Readings feature readings from each of our three authors\, plus snacks inspired by each author’s passages. Created and curated by Egg chef Evan Hanczor\, each evening concludes with a wide-ranging discussion and Q&A between the authors and Evan. The $15 ticket covers admission\, the textual snacks\, and one complimentary drink! \nAdditional drinks (beer and wine sponsored by our friends at Txikito and the Brooklyn Brewery) will be available for purchase\, and McNally Jackson will be in the house selling books as usual. \nWe keep these evenings intimate and they always fill up\, so get your tickets early. Also please note that while we will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions\, all snacks are predetermined and drawn from specific bits of text\, so we may not be able to modify every course. Knowing in advance certainly helps\, so give us a heads up. \nFeel free to write us at contentables@gmail.com with any questions\, and follow us on Instagram at @tables.of.contents and twitter at @tblsofcontents to keep up with the latest. Hope to see you at the table.

SUMMARY:BookBook Club: Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley
DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nEvery six-ish weeks we read a new memoir\, a collection of essays\, novel\, or anything else we find interesting that somehow\, in a big or small way\, relates to food. Then we discuss. \nLucy Knisley loves food. The daughter of a chef and a gourmet\, this talented young cartoonist comes by her obsession honestly. In her forthright\, thoughtful\, and funny memoir\, Lucy traces key episodes in her life thus far\, framed by what she was eating at the time and lessons learned about food\, cooking\, and life. Each chapter is bookended with an illustrated recipe—many of them treasured family dishes\, and a few of them Lucy’s original inventions. \nA welcome read for anyone who ever felt more passion for a sandwich than is strictly speaking proper\, Relish is a graphic novel for our time: it invites the reader to celebrate food as a connection to our bodies and a connection to the earth\, rather than an enemy\, a compulsion\, or a consumer product. DESCRIPTION:From our organizers: \nCome join Katie Parla\, acclaimed culinary journalist and foremost authority on Italy\, to celebrate her latest cookbook FOOD of the ITALIAN SOUTH: Recipes for Classic\, Disappearing\, and Lost Dishes. \nFood of the Italian South goes where no English language cookbook has gone before and delves deeply into the culinary traditions of the Italian South\, a region best known for its rustic and romantic cuisine. Parla shares both historical and cultural insights that encapsulate the miles of rugged beaches\, sheep-dotted mountains\, meditatively quiet towns\, and\, most important\, soul-satisfying recipes—some of which are true to the originals and others that have been reimagined in a modern way.
