He was the first American trained as a French chef. He introduced the grandfather of modern stove technology to America. He cooked the most famous dinner in American history, The Reconciliation Dinner. He was also owned by Thomas Jefferson.
Born in Virginia in 1765 into the most famous slave family in American history, James Hemings contributed to the foundation of American Southern cuisine as we know it today. In this class, students will learn how to make a selection of recipes developed by James Hemings and Thomas Jefferson while gaining an understanding of American food history from the 18th century through the lens of a slave-turned-Master Chef.
