Speculative Biodesign

May 31, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

$100 – $200

According to the organizers:

This is a 2 session course. Speculative Biodesign meets Wednesday May 31 & June 7 from 6pm-9pm

Today’s design studio and biotech lab are merging. Creative people from all backgrounds are helping shape the future of biotechnology. Designed objects and materials have been made with algae, bioengineered microbes, fungi and tissue cells. How can we use these living materials, who should have access, and in what ways might they facilitate a more sustainable future? This Speculative Design Course is a perfect introduction to these ideas.

In this course we will imagine speculative design outcomes using biotechnology. We will work hands-on in the lab to grow material samples and imagine how the materials might be used in the future. We’ll learn to use design as a medium for experimentation to stimulate critical discussion on the social and cultural implications of current and emerging biotechnologies. By exploring potential futures we will begin to understand the effects of the design outcomes, and make informed decisions about how we utilize the technologies going forward.

Participants will gain skills and knowledge of the relevance of speculative design applications for biotechnology as a tool to realize potential futures and explore the potential impacts in our lives.
