Missed the sign-up boat for CSAs this year? Not to worry — there are still tons of opportunities to join the farm fresh fan club. Just Food has great CSA resources, and fall CSA options abound. CSAs support farmers in a slightly different capacity than farmers markets in that the seasonal sign-up system defrays a farmer’s considerable pre-harvest costs, like seeds and equipment. This model has been hybridized with the advent of CSAs that allow week-to-week sign-ups.
One such flexible model, Rustic Roots Delivery, has partnered with Union Market to provide customers with the option to join a season-long CSA (prorated, of course, as summer is winding down) or order veggies on a week-to-week basis. From now through late October, Rustic Roots will deliver shares of produce from a variety of local farms to Union Market locations, and their weekly fruit and vegetable basket feeds a family of four. A seasonal share of seven to eight vegetables and two to three fruits per week runs $585, while the weekly baskets run $55 each.
“It’s always been a part of our mission to support local farmers and producers,” say Union Market owners Marko Lalic and Martin Nunez. “We want to create convenient access to the best local and sustainable produce of the season.”
