In Latin America, the peak of Christmas celebrating takes place this Sunday, aka El dia de los reyes (day of the kings). Known in English as Epiphany, January 6th commemorates the day the Three Kings arrived in Bethlehem bearing gifts for baby Jesus. But the part that gets us all giddy is the food, obviously. Rosca de reyes, or bread of kings, or the King Cake, is (when made right) a sweet, moist and yeasty ring studded with dried candied fruits, sugar and icing in Christmas colors. You’ll find one of the best in the city at Don Paco Lopez Panaderia in the pan-Latin neighborhood called Sunset Park (read more about it here in the mag). Call now to order a small ($20), medium ($35) or large ($43) cake for your own celebration, but watch out: whoever gets the slice with the plastic baby Jesus baked inside pays for next year’s cake!
