Last week we gave away two tickets to the Blue Moon Fish special seafood dinner at Bubby’s Pie Company on the waterfront in Dumbo, part of a series of locally sourced, highly curated dinners they’re hosting called the Fall Dinner Symposium. Each dinner features a speaker well-versed in what you’re eating, and the whole experience is meant to highlight the excellence of both American and regional foods. The dinners continue through November, but the real highlight of the series is the one this Wednesday, a Mark Twain meal featuring Andrew Beahrs, author of Twain’s Feast: Searching for America’s Lost Foods in the Footsteps of Samuel Clemens.
We’ve got two free tickets to give away to the event, which Bubby’s is calling a “feast spectacle.” The menu is based on the fantastic list of American foods Twain listed out in his 1907 book A Tramp Abroad, essentially a list of what he was longing to eat upon his return from Europe–he called their food “insipid.” (Better still are the recipes that follow, for Ash Cake, New England Pie and Carving Fowls in the German Fashion.)

Bubby’s Main Street Fall Dinner Symposium
Wednesday, October 26th 2011 7p.m.-10p.m. with Mark Twain’s Feast Spectacle with Andrew Beahrs
Bubby’s presents these special dinners to celebrate efforts to renovate American agriculture and the American menu. Each event will feature a conversation with persons who are deeply involved in a significant aspect of this project, followed by a meal that illustrates, materially and pleasurably, the themes under discussion.
With the guidance and commentary of author Andrew Beahrs (Twain’s Feast: In Search of America’s Lost Foods in the Footsteps of Samuel Clemens), Bubby’s will gallantly attempt, within the bounds of sanity and reality, to create a dinner based on Mark Twain’s extraordinary list of his favorite American foods. During an extended sojourn in Europe, Twain dreamed of an American meal with more than eighty courses, including wild turkey, baked apples, oysters in every manner, succotash, porterhouse steak and hoe-cakes, Southern style. This feast will not offer every dish on the list (terrapin is no longer available) but those in attendance will experience an epic journey through the history of American food and the mind of an American genius.
